DES MOINES, IA (May 16, 2025) – ICON Water Trails is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $250,000 grant from Bank of America. This investment will help support ICON’s Hubbell Trailhead at the Fleur Drive Dam, the second whitewater attraction in its downtown development timeline. The access point will include a whitewater feature, kayak launch and boat ramp, along with a recreation channel, among other amenities.

The Hubbell Trailhead is a part of ICON’s broader effort to activate 150 miles of water trails across central Iowa, with more than $100.3 million in funding secured so far. ICON’s strategy drives economic growth, attracts workforce and tourism, and provides access to recreation, all while bolstering on-water safety and environmental conservation. The efficacy of the initiative is evidenced in a recent economic impact report which found that ICON’s fifteen existing sites hosted more than 250,000 visitors, supporting more than 110 jobs, with $3.4 million in wages – during one recreation season alone.

“We are incredibly grateful to Bank of America for their commitment to ICON Water Trails and our mission,” said Stephanie Oppel, Executive Director of ICON Water Trails. “The dedication of partners like Bank of America makes it possible for ICON to advance our vision of revitalizing our waterways, making our communities better places to live, work, play, and visit.”

“Partnering with organizations like ICON Water Trails demonstrates Bank of America’s commitment to supporting the overall well-being of our communities,” said Heidi Parkhurst, president, Bank of America Iowa. “ICON Water Trails connects people and communities by connecting water. We’re uplifting our local community by supporting organizations like ICON Water Trails, who are aligned with our overall goal of improving the lives of individuals and families in the areas where we live and work.”

Bank of America announced their funding during a press conference at ICON’s Hubbell Trailhead with Stephanie Oppel, Executive Director of ICON Water Trails, and Heidi Parkhurst, President of Bank of America Iowa.
