Discover Fall Along the ICON Water Trails
August 28, 2026
As you soak up these last bits of summer, don’t worry – the fun along the ICON Water Trails continues. As temperatures cool and the leaves begin to change, fall brings new opportunities to experience the rivers, creeks, and trails throughout the ICON Water Trails network.
Paddling is a great way to connect with the outdoors and take in the changing fall scenery. From colorful trees along the shoreline to cooler temperatures on the water, fall offers a different experience for paddlers. As temperatures drop, however, it’s important to stay mindful of changing conditions and plan ahead. Also, prepare your skills for the next recreation season and the opening of Principal Point over the coming months with these upcoming classes:

- November 15, 2026: Indoor Kayaking – Polk County Iowa
You don’t have to get on the water to enjoy the water trails though. Fall is a great time to explore the trails, parks, and natural areas that connect to ICON’s network. Cooler temperatures make for comfortable hiking and biking, while the changing leaves provide a beautiful backdrop along the rivers and creeks. Grab your bike, lace up your hiking shoes, and explore a new trail or access point this fall.
For those who prefer to slow down and cast a line, fall is also a great time to go fishing. As the weather cools, anglers can enjoy a quieter experience along the rivers and creeks throughout the ICON Water Trails network. Find an access point and bring your gear and spend a fall morning or afternoon on the water.
The changing season also creates new opportunities for kids and families to explore. ICON’s Youth Adventure Education series will continue through the fall, giving young explorers a chance to get outside, learn about local waterways, and experience the natural world firsthand. But you don’t have to attend a program to explore together. Head to a nearby ICON access point with your family and see what you can discover.
One of the best parts of exploring the water trails in the fall is simply taking in the scenery. As the leaves change, the rivers, creeks, and surrounding landscapes take on new colors and character. Whether you’re paddling, hiking, fishing, biking, or spending time with family, take a moment to slow down and enjoy the season.
